About us

The Val di Chiana is a valley in Tuscany that extends from Arezzo to Orvieto taking its name from the river Clanis. It was extensively settled by the Etruscans for about 600 years from 700 to 100 BC. The origin of these people has remained a mystery, however they are certainly considered the forefathers of the Italian people. Expert hydraulic engineers they learned how to solve problems dealing with flooding, drained swampy areas, turned them into luxuriant farmlands soon transforming the valley in the "granary of Etruria".

Skilled farmers they also grew different types of grains, grape and the same artichoke Italy is still famous for. The Etruscans founded many cities among which Arezzo, Cortona and Chiusi creating a splendid civilization that left many traces in the aristocratic tombs in the necropolis they built, some of which can be visited today. The vases, bronze statues, urns and other extraordinary objects found in the richest tombs together with masterpieces of gold jewelry can be seen in the Museums of Chianciano, Chiusi and Cortona.

The Romans left many traces of their civilization like the amphitheatre in Arezzo and the catacombs in Chiusi. They built the Via Cassia along which armies, ecclesiastic dignitaries, caravans and merchants have been travelling since . They also founded many cities among which Castiglion del Lago, where the battle of lake Trasimeno took place about 200 BC. The legendary Carthaginian general, Hannibal, brought his army of 50,000 soldiers, 9,000 horses and 37 elephants over the Pyrenees and Alps to Italy and overtook ,with one of the most successful ambushes in military history, the Roman army.
